How to find a job and develop your career in hospitality

HR expert, Dawn Redman, reveals how to land your perfect job and have a long-lasting career in hospitality.

When I was asked to write a blog about top tips for writing a CV or top interview tips my initial thoughts were hold on! I think we should be addressing first, how to find a job and develop your career in hospitality.

Hospitality is tough, unsociable hours, working at weekends and sometimes feels like an endless task in pleasing your customers; However, I have worked in recruitment for over 20 years and Hospitality is one of the most exciting sectors to work in.

It can be incredibly rewarding and the best candidates can enjoy great benefits. However, getting to the top of the ladder can sometimes seem very steep indeed. I have pulled together some tips to enable you to look for and find a rewarding and enjoyable career within Hospitality

First of all what do you want to do...?

Do you understand the sector you want to work in?

Look for opportunities that you are genuinely interested in and that you are qualified for. Don't worry if you do not have “all” the skills listed in the vacancy advertised, and in some cases you probably won't, but you will need to be able to demonstrate that you have the drive and enthusiasm to learn and to be able to get up to speed quickly.

You will need to also do some research as well; Researching job roles and what requirements are necessary for you to succeed in these roles  is quite easy to do, think of your favourite restaurants, bars, pubs or hotels and research that company, once you have reviewed their website and googled some information about them, look to see if they have any graduate opportunities, trainee opportunities or career opportunities on their website and look to see if that opportunity will offer you career development, offer training or provide additional training for you to develop your skills.

If you can’t find any vacancies on their website look at Hospitality job boards for opportunities with other companies and if you see something that you think you’ll be great in, research that company and look at the opportunity for career development..

Applying for the right position

Don't just apply for any opportunity, make sure it will offer you development and meet your career aspiration, also don’t forget to consider the location of the role and how you are going to get there, day in and day out.

Never look for a position purely on the salary, I can hear you screaming nonsense Dawn! believe me salary alone will not necessarily give you the right career path and job satisfaction that you want.

Once you have found the company and the job vacancy you want to apply for, you will need to create a winning CV, look at the Hospitality Guild's CV masterclass to create a winning CV.
