Adopt a School

Adopt a School

Overview

Chefs Adopt a School was founded in 1990 by the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts - Britain's leading professional association of head chefs, head pastry chefs, restaurant managers and suppliers.

CAAS is a national charity which teaches children, in a holistic way, about food, food provenance, food growing, healthy eating, nutrition, hygiene and cookery. Professional chefs deliver sessions in the classroom which range in content from the four tastes and five senses to advanced practical cookery.

Description

The charity reaches over 21,000 children every year working with primary, secondary, Special Educational Needs and hospital schools as well as pupil referral units, sports centres and food festivals. CAAS believes that every child should be taught about the importance of food and its significance in our lives.

Understanding food, food provenance and nutrition and having the skills to prepare food are key to ensuring that future generations are fundamentally healthy and able to feed themselves. Food education can aid the teaching of several other subjects and in the long term lead to a better understanding of agriculture and the environment as well as contribute to tackling the increasing problem of obesity. The social benefits of food education are also well documented.

Objectives of Chefs Adopt a School:

  • To introduce children and young people to real, fresh food through an animated approach to tasting
  • To encourage children to consider food more closely and learn about food provenance
  • To teach basic food preparation skills
  • To encourage an understanding of the importance of healthy eating
  • To offer an insight into the industry
